The Last First People — a two-minute AI short film. Imagining a world after us.

What is in the film

A face in close-up. The eyes are closed and the expression sits somewhere between pain and calm without settling on either. The hair is combed back and wet; a grey, technical-looking fabric covers the shoulders. Behind, a cold grey surface broken by vertical lines falls out of focus.

The palette never leaves blue-grey. Even skin stays inside that coldness, with the lips the only warm note. For two minutes the camera holds close to this face.

The hard part

Carrying emotion with the eyes closed is harder than carrying it with them open. Without a gaze the viewer has nothing to hold onto, and all that remains is muscle tension, the trace of breath on the face and very small movements. At that scale even a tremor is too much.

In close-up, skin is the most demanding surface there is. Too little pore, fine hair and moisture breaking the light and the face turns plastic; too much and the texture itself pulls attention away from the expression. The band between the two is narrow.

Keeping a cold palette from going monotonous is a separate balance. Narrow the colour range and the image flattens quickly, so depth had to be built from the direction of light rather than from colour.

Why we make films like this

This sits at the speculative end of the portfolio. It was not made for a brand but for a question: what does a face look like in a world that comes after us?

Commercial work rarely lets you hold this long on this little; a brief usually wants something shown. Here we tried the opposite — carrying two minutes while showing almost nothing.

What we learned in that close-up face work carried over into later brand pieces with performers. The commercial return on experimental work usually arrives that way: not directly, but through the problem it solves.
