About the Film

Skii 2 — the two-minute second chapter of the series, expanding the world of the first film.

What is in the film

The second chapter in the series, two minutes long. A vintage living room: floral wallpaper, a faded pink sofa, the warm light of a table lamp, framed photographs on the wall.

Inside a wicker basket, among teddy bears, a rag doll and old postcards, sits a robot with a metal body. Two large round eyes are lit from within and it wears a yellow and black striped shirt. Rust marks its body and two thin antennae rise from its head.

The hard part

Two minutes is a long time to carry a character without its identity slipping. The spacing of the robot's eyes, the placement of the rust, the angle of the antennae, the weight of the stripes on the shirt — all of it had to stay the same in every shot. When a character shifts even slightly between scenes, viewers stop following it as the same character and the film comes apart. So the character was locked before any scene was built.

Emotion was the second problem. A metal body and two lit circles had to hold a look capable of carrying sadness once it was placed among the toys. You cannot do that with facial expression, so we built it out of the brightness of the eyes, the tilt of the head and the length of the pause. The longest holds in the film are not accidental.

The palette never leaves off-white, dried rose and faded green. The nostalgia comes from that restriction rather than from the contents of the scene.

Why we make films like this

This is film work. It is not a product piece and it does not answer to a brand brief. The whole scene is invented — there is no real location or object behind it.

That freedom is the difficulty rather than the advantage. When nothing has a reference, consistency has to be built from zero as well; in client work the product itself acts as an anchor, and here there is no anchor.

We make these films to run our own experiments in narrative and character. Long-form character consistency gets solved here first, and the solution then moves into brand work.

For work like this

We work with teams developing character-led narrative, short films and episodic content. Two minutes is long enough to introduce a character and their world without losing the viewer.
