About the Film

Unfamiliar Skin — a two-minute AI short film. A visual essay on body, identity and estrangement.

What is in the film

A child's face in close-up. The hair is unkempt and sun-bleached; there is a smile, but it has not quite settled, as though something is about to be said. Behind, a wide and empty stretch of land lies under an orange dust close to sunset.

A subtitle carries a line of poetry. The film moves on that text rather than on image. The camera holds close to the face and stays there.

The hard part

A child's face is among the easiest things to get wrong. Let the proportions slip by a few pixels and the face reads either too infantile or like a shrunken adult. On top of that there is a smile here, and a smile changes half a face — if the creasing at the corner of the eye does not move at the same moment and the same rate as the mouth, the expression turns false.

The second difficulty is the relationship between text and image. When a poem is strong on its own, the image starts leaning on it and goes lazy. The frame had to stand beside the words rather than illustrate them.

Dust is a layer of its own; it had to hang in the air, absorb light and build atmosphere without veiling the face.

Why we make films like this

This is not brand work. It is our own visual study on body, identity and estrangement, built around a question rather than answering a brief.

Working with text is what we are testing here. In commercial work the words usually carry the message; here it is the reverse — the text carries the feeling and the image accompanies it. Learning to build that relationship pays off later on brand films that run with voice-over.

Length matters too. Two minutes and seventeen seconds sits at the edge of what a single face can hold, and we kept it long deliberately in order to find that edge.
